Garrett Crochet’s return to the South Side was nearly storybook material, as he dominated for most of the afternoon to help the Boston Red Sox avoid a sweep, edging out the White Sox 3-1.

As expected, the matchup was a pitchers' showcase, with both Crochet and Shane Smith trading scoreless frames early on. Through five innings, both teams had been completely shut down, and Crochet’s outing began to flirt with history as whispers of a no-hitter started circulating.

The deadlock finally broke with two outs in the top of the sixth. After an Alex Bregman single and a walk to Wilyer Abreu, Trevor Story stepped up and delivered a clutch two-run double, giving Boston a 2-0 lead. Despite the damage, Crochet stayed in a groove, issuing only a walk to Brooks Baldwin in the sixth.

Smith wrapped up his day after six solid innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out three.

Crochet came back out for the eighth and carried his no-hit bid into the inning—until, naturally, it was Chase Meidroth who broke it up. The same Meidroth who came over in the offseason trade that sent Crochet to Boston. Baseball poetry.

After that base hit, Crochet exited to well-earned applause, and Garrett Whitlock took over. The White Sox mounted a threat, with Brooks Baldwin following with a single to put two runners in scoring position. After a close call that went in Chicago’s favor, Matt Thaiss came through with an RBI knock, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

But the rally fizzled. Joshua Palacios struck out, and Miguel Vargas sent a fly ball into an outfield glove to end the inning with the tying run stranded.

Boston padded their lead in the ninth, when Story crushed a solo homer off Bryse Wilson. Aroldis Chapman came in to shut things down, bouncing back with a smooth inning after allowing Saturday’s walk-off.

While they couldn’t complete the sweep, it was still a strong series for the White Sox, who took two out of three and now sit at 4-11 on the season. They’ll take Monday off before hosting the A’s at Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday.

Maybe one of these years I’ll get a W on my birthday — but not this time. Have a great Sunday, and we’ll see you back here Tuesday!
